It all started in 1980 at the Antonov design bureau in the Ukrainian SSR, then part of the Soviet Union. Until the Boeing 747-8F, this airplane was for thirty years the world's heaviest gross-weight production cargo airplane and the second heaviest operational cargo aircraft. It is worth mentioning the big success of Antonov's airplanes and the role they played in the Chernobyl disaster relief operation.
